By measuring urinary neuro-biogenic amines, we can learn a great deal about a patientís ability to synthesize and metabolize neurotransmitters in the peripheral nervous system and behind the blood-brain barrier. Neuro-biogenic amine levels may be influenced by diet, age, gender, body mass, kidney function, environmental exposures, infection, and tobacco use, as well as conditions such as metabolic disorders, mood or behavioral disorders, or in rare cases the presence of certain tumors. As a result, evaluating urinary neuro-biogenic amines may offer increased clarity about a patientís health and functional status.
f you are able to sleep through the night without getting up to urinate, a first morning mid-stream urine
may be adequate. If you cannot remain in bed for at least 8 hours without arising, a 24 hour urine
collection will provide the best assessment of metabolic pathways.
The ingestion of certain foods may affect the results of urinary neurotransmitter testing, and should be avoided prior to collection (see details below). Your do not need to discontinue any prescription medications for this test. Foods to avoid prior to your urine collection:
The following foods should be avoided for 48 hours before collecting urine for this profile:
Serotonin - avocados, dates, eggplant, all fruit [including bananas, cantaloupe, grapefruit, kiwifruit, melons, pineapple, plantains, plums], all nuts [including hickory nuts, butternuts, pecans, walnuts], and tomatoes and tomato products).
Catecholamines - caffeinated beverages, and nicotine, tyrosine rich foods, such as nuts, bananas, or cheese. Foods should be avoided for 48 hours, caffeine and nicotine for at least 12 hours prior to sample collection.
If you are unsure then it is best to avoid the food for 48 hours prior to the sample collection.
Female patients should not collect urine during a menstrual period.
